Our Website Design

As professional IT specialists, with over 30 years of commercial experience of a whole range of technologies, including user inteface and web standards, accessibility and usability, we care deeply that every software inteface along with each of our websites is built responsibly and can be used by everyone. We have made best efforts to ensure that this website meets current best-practice, relevant legislation whilst meeting the needs of our Customers.

Our track record of success has been in part, our ability to assimilate quality feedback and improve ourselves and our product and service offerings. Standards compliance

We have tried to ensure that our site validates as XHTML 1.0 Strict.. We have tried to balance the needs of our Customers, our Business and other users of this website against what we determine as realistic deliverable web design and web content. There are elements on this site that will not validate as XHTML 1.0, due to the decisions and trade offs made.

All pages on this site also aim to be Section 508 approved, complying with U.S. Federal Government Section 508 Guidelines.

Browsers

Basic Business Systems deliver results for our Customers in part because of our pragmatic and common sense approach. Whilst websites and information contained therein should be accessible regardless of the browser used. We have built this website using current web standards to meet realistic and deliverable criteria. We, like many others, support standards-compliant browsers as a priority, but make use of progressive enhancement to ensure delivery of information to all browsers.

Our progressive involvement in developing web-based applications and web sites, we agree with driving web design and web application inteface design forward through responsible implementation and innovation. We strongly support web standards and forward-thinking inteface layouts and web design and we actively make use of new methodologies and best practice. We commit significant parts of our budget to Research and Development to ensure our technical skills stay sharp.

This website makes use of layout and visual techniques made available with the CSS3 specification and these methods are supported within Safari, Firefox V3 upwards,Google Chrome V8 upwards andOpera V10 upwards.

We have decicded not to support or implement code to cope with specific foibles of older web browsers such as Internet Explorer 6 and to some extent IE 7.

At the last count, our google analytics told us that this software is used by a minority of our site visitors. As purveyors of quality technical solutions, we recommend against the use of IE 6 and to that end, have not spent the significant extra time needed to ensure our site renders on this web browser and other older or non standards compliant browsers.

Users browsing with IE7 or below, Firefox 1.x, and older browsers will still be able to access all information, though the visual experience may be reduced where necessary, particularly where we have used CSS version 3 and HTML 5 markup.

We would encourage Internet Explorer users to upgrade their copy of IE 5.5 or 6, or abandon this browser software altogether and use Firefox ,Safari (both available for Windows), or Google Chrome.

Handheld Devices

At the time of writing, this, our latest release of website (version 4 - 2011) is in “soft-launch” and we have not yet fully implemented layouts and configurations for mobile and handheld devices.

Using web standards, our web pages can still be delivered to select mobile devices, with reasonable accessibility, although we do plan to implement handheld stylesheets to improve your browsing experience on devices with small screens and limited web access.

Links are written to make sense out of context - we rarely use “click here”.Links to downloadable documents or PDFs are clearly marked as such and links to downloadable contact information, such as our V-cards, are also clearly labeled, accompanied by a Microformat icon.
All links to external websites or resources open in the same window for accessibility reasons.

Images

All content images used in this site include descriptive ALT attributes - if you find one that doesn't, please let us know, we'll fix it!.
Purely decorative graphics include null ALT attributes.Background and decorative images are generally created with stylesheets and therefore do not require ALT attributes.
Our web pages are designed so that the content is still legible and accessible with images turned off, or stylesheets unavailable.

Content and structure

This site uses cascading style sheets for visual layout and elements of unobtrusive JavaScript for behaviour. If your browser or browsing device does not support stylesheets at all, or if stylesheets are disabled, the content of each page is still readable. If JavaScript is unavailable or disabled, any bahavioural functions will degrade but all content should remain accessible.
Most of the text on this website can be increased or decreased in size using built-in browser tools. However, to maintain appearance we recommend using a modern browser with text-zoom facilities.
